I bought this set because I wanted to learn more about DND when I was designing and building my own world for Neverwinter Nights. Boy was it an eye opener. These books are the gold standard in DND information there is no question about it. The drawings are outstanding and the information is overwhelming. This set will teach you all that you need to know to plan and build worlds and online events. The players guide will tell you what players need to have with them to be able to handle certain creatures and taks at different levels. The monsters guide will explain the ins and outs of the monsters so that you will know what they can or should do and how they are designed to fight players. The DM Guide will tell you how to build an event based on the other standard information. IE: How big does a dungion room need to be for a large creature to be able to fight against 4 players given the specific creatures abilities or weapons?So many events and Neverwinter Nights worlds are [..] because the people designing them don't take a holistic approach to designing the world or the events and missions. For instance, have you ever gone on a mission to a swamp and battled a creature that doesn't belong there? All the time if you play online world that private individuals have designed. What about those cases where you have to talk to a creature that has no vocal cords (example given by long time DM Kurt Winchenbach)? Exactly man. People don't take the time to read through these books and use all of them as the references that they should when designing worlds or events. Guess what folks, it shows! It is easy to spot a [...] designed world once you have read the books.The DM guide will tell you how to design a dungeon square for square based on the sight and movement of creatures and players. People don't think they need to know this because they tell themselves that they are designing a computer game world and not a paper DND event so they never learn the basics. Then, during the event, everyone dies and the DM just shrugs his shoulders and say, "I'll fix it for next time".The failure? The failure is in the DM or builder thinking that just because it is a computer game (Neverwinter Nights) and not a Paper DND event than the mechanics of game play are entirely different. This is severely flawed thinking my friend because the computer game still uses the same DND game mechanics as the DM Guide illustrates. The game is still based on tile squares or calculated distances which means that if you just throw an area together without calculating monster distances and walk waypoints correctly then your players will run into monsters before you planned or even entire groups of monsters right when they enter a room. Thusly, they all get killed and then later every realizes that "something was wrong about that encounter."If you are building a Neverwinter world and you want it to play correctly and not feel cheesy or second rate then you will get the entire set of these books and read them and learn correctly how to set up a game and design dungeons and encounters. Trust me, it will make your games and online worlds miles improved from the other basic ones. I was initially irritated but having read 4th edition I am glad. All my d20 books are compatable with it and there is a strong 3.5/ d20 community. I played the game somewhat regularly throughout the late eighties and early nineties, DMing through the Rules Cyclopedia (an excellent work) and running several characters with AD&D 2nd Edition. But I have always loved Dungeons and Dragons and wished I could have played more.Early last year a buddy let me borrow a copy of his 3.5 PH, and I reluctantly agreed to browse through it. After spending several weeks with it, I was so excited that I decided to pick up the Core Rulebook Set and try to get a group together. I was able to recruit some new players (including my wife) and some vets, and we have been having a blast ever since.There is far too much content to review, and many more folks with a lot more experience have beaten the package to death, but simply put, it is outstanding. I call this system "reality simulated" (well...as much as "fantasy" can be reality). Again, given that I'm not an expert with tabletop games, I was blown away by the incredible amount of detail here. I will also confess that I was very intimidated at first, and I considered just moving on to the newer, and currently supported, 4th edition system. But in my investigation of 4th, it simply departed too much from the feel of D&D that I grew up with. It looks like a great system in its own right, but it feels too much like an MMORPG to me. The 3.5 edition seems like the epitome of D&D. It is extremely robust and customizable, and you can see the great amount of thought and care that has gone into every rule.I realize that this review is somewhat irrelevant, since these books are no longer in print. But if anyone is considering getting into fantasy tabletop gaming (and you are not put off with rich complexity), please don't look past this product. Being new to the game I was lost and ended up most of the night reading through another player's guide book, just learning the basics of the game. i stopped by a local game shop but they didn't have the Player's Guide, so I checked here.For the price, this is a great value, normally each book retails about $30~ depending on your store. These three books contain the rules and details to understand the game from a players view, while the set also includes the Dungeon Master's guide as well, it's helpful when you want to run your own games.For now I haven't read into the Dungeon Master's guide, just the Monster Manual and Player's Guide. Both are easy to read but contain many details of playing. The illustrations are very nice, and the information about each race, player class is very helpful for playing. The Monster Manual is also filled with illustrations and information about each monster you might discover in the D&D world. One note about the Monster Manual, my DM mentioned that reading the Monster Manual might be considered cheating in some circles since you know the weakness of the encountered monster before actuallying fighting them in the game. During our gaming I just read the Player's Guide and read the Monster Manual just for fun.Overall, these are the core rule books for the D&D game.
